Turning the Light on Lighting

Aboli Maharwade reports on a workshop conducted by Pooja Gupte on lighting a film set.

Students of SCMSophia were introduced to the various types of light used on film sets, the basics of lighting a scene, the technical aspects of lighting, setting the frame, and lighting subjects of different skin tones in a scene.  This session was organized with Pooja Gupte, a cinematographer in the Indian film industry. Gupte has studied at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. She is credited with doing cinematography for Rukh (2017), Crossing Bridges (2013) and Peddlers (2012).

Three-point lighting is often used in lighting a scene and this was demonstrated practically by setting up the 3 point lighting setup in the studio. Students got to know how the key light, fill light and backlight work. The experience of getting to know the lights and their technical side was exciting and new to us and it helped us see better.

One of the crucial aspects of filmmaking is to light the scene, such that it will create an impact on a viewer—lighting communicates the tone and mood of the scene. It plays a very subtle yet powerful role and teaches us more about light and its impact.

Manavi Goyal, a student at SCMSophia, “She gave us important tips which we were able to use in our film projects. For example, she told us that while shooting we should look at the camera screen to check exposure and not the field monitor.”
