On October 1, 2022, the students of SCMSophia visited Walkeshwar to visit the Banganga Tank, which has a fascinating narrative behind it. It is said that when Lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Laxmana were travelling through this area during their years of exile (the vanvasa), Sita felt thirsty. This was an area close to the sea so no fresh water could be expected. So Lord Rama shot an arrow into the ground and the Ganga spurted fresh water from the rock.
We reached Banganga around noon when the sun was hot overhead. We were immediately fascinated by the village vibe of the area. This was in the heart of Metropolitan Mumbai, where the filmstar Rishi Kapoor’s ashes were immersed two years ago, in 2020, during the pandemic.
This was a special treat: the old deepstambhas and the modern houses; the water glittering in the noonday sun and the ducks disporting themselves. There were little boys playing on the steps that led down to the water and a black dog that suddenly became everyone’s favourite model.
