We're online again! Now, pros at setting up Meet and Google classroom, we seamlessly went into one more year. It just made me think of how adaptable our mind is. A year back, we couldn't imagine the situation: teaching remotely; and here we were, strangely comforted by technology and feeling all was “normal”.
Fortunately, the virus waned and a window opened for us to be back on campus. It was surreal. We were a small number walking through a college that usually swamped us.. We had all imagined, I think, as faculty that we would get back to work. But every decision to send students out on work had to be weighed with caution. We had to balance between a learning opportunity and a concern for safety. There was an invisible sword hanging over our heads. But we managed to complete the practical training without any untoward incidents.
The year also held bittersweet memories for us. We lost our alumna Seher Latif last year. Her business partner Shivani Sharan honoured her memory by contributing towards the newly renovated SCMSophia - Seher Latif Memorial studio. We now have a modern, state of the art, fully equipped studio that we are immensely proud of!
Come December, we were to take a break and come back on campus for exams but the virus reared its ugly head once again and we were back to the online mode. The seesaw act was mentally draining, both for us and for the students.
It’s been business as usual for the students since March and we are back doing what we do best at SCMSophia - pushing them to reach beyond. Trying harder and not giving up. Learning the difference between professional and student behaviour. We are amply assisted in our endeavour by our vastly experienced and dedicated faculty. The best way to inculcate professionalism is to get professionals to share their learnings. As usual, we had more than our share, across media, across the world! From war correspondent and anchor Leela Jacinto joining us from Paris, to our own successful alums like Vedika Sud from CNN, the list was truly kick ass!
What you see here is the effort of the students, put together through the year. Overcoming challenges of a ‘normal but not yet’ world. We have yet another brilliant edition of Marginalia: the 35th one. We are sure you will enjoy it. Please do share it widely to encourage them.
